From 18 November 2025, all company directors and persons with significant control (PSCs) listed on the Companies House register will be legally required to verify their identity. Who Needs to Verify?
You only need to complete the identity verification process once. A unique code will then apply to all of your company roles.
Those required to verify include:
- Company directors
- Persons with significant control (PSCs) – individuals who own or control more than 25% of a company’s shares or voting rights
- Company secretaries
- Agents or representatives filing on behalf of a company
- Relevant Legal Entities (RLEs) that control another company
How Can You Verify?
There are three options available:
- Online via the GOV.UK One Login service
- Mobile app – download the GOV.UK Login app to scan your passport chip and upload ID
- In person – at participating Post Offices
Step-by-Step: Verifying Your Identity
Step 1: Prepare your documents
You’ll need:
- A valid passport
- UK driving licence
- Other government-issued ID (if applicable)
In some cases, proof of address (e.g. utility bill or bank statement) may also be required.
Step 2: Create a GOV.UK One Login
Set up your account here: Verify your identity for Companies House.
Please Note: This is different from your Companies House WebFiling account.
Step 3: Enter your details
Make sure your name, date of birth, and address match exactly with both your ID documents and the details held at Companies House.
Step 4: Upload your documents
Depending on your answers, the system will guide you to upload documents via the GOV.UK app or through your web browser. Images must be clear, complete, and legible.
Step 5: Security checks
Companies House may run additional checks to confirm your documents are genuine.
Step 6: Receive confirmation
If successful, you’ll be issued with a Personal Unique Identifier Code (e.g. XY1-Z000-0000). This will appear on screen and remain accessible via your GOV.UK One Login. Keep a secure copy for your records.
Step 7: Share your code
If you use an accountant or agent to make filings, they’ll need this code to continue submitting on your behalf after November 2025.
Exemptions from Verification
In limited circumstances, you may be exempt. This includes if:
- You cannot use digital tools due to age, disability, or lack of internet access
- Your religious beliefs prevent electronic communication
- You are acting as a personal representative for someone who has died
In addition, the following are exempt:
- Trusts
- Estates
- Trustees of registered pension schemes
- Non-resident companies
Exemptions must be applied for directly to HMRC/Companies House with valid reasons.
