Founder of G W Dick & Co Chartered Accountants
(30th December 1928 – 10th February 2023)
It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of George William Dick FCA.
Bill (as he was known to friends and family) was the founder and partner of G W Dick & Co LLP based in Beach Road, South Shields. He dedicated his life to supporting numerous clients with their business and tax affairs alongside his son Andrew who joined the family business in 1990.
Bill qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1952, gaining his practice certificate in 1953 and began working from a one bedroomed bedsit in John Clay Street, South Shields. Throughout the next two decades Bill worked tirelessly, building up his client base and developing his reputation as a trusted advisor. In the 1960s he rented his first office in King Street, moving to larger premises in Fowler Street in the early 1970s as the business continued to grow. Finally, he was able to purchase his own office premises in Beach Road, South Shields in the late 1970s, where they continue to operate to this day.
Bill’s family, friends, clients, and former clients have been paying tribute to the businessman after he died suddenly on 10th February 2023.
In a statement, his family said, “Bill loved going into the office, working with the dedicated staff, catching up, meeting people and advising clients. He worked at the Beach Road office until 2020 when, at the age of 91, he was forced to work from home due to Covid. He continued working from home and was an active partner in the firm until the day he died.
He was a loving and dedicated husband, Dad and Grandpa and we will cherish our own special memories of him always”.
Bill’s family would like to take this opportunity to thank friends and clients, both past and present, for their support of G W Dick & Co over the last 70 years. Bill’s legacy will continue in the safe hands of his son Andrew, as G W Dick & Co continue to operate from their office in Beach Road.
A funeral service to commemorate Bill’s life will be held at South Tyneside Crematorium on Saturday 4th March 2023 at 10.15am.
